Terry Geerdts, owner of A Pretty Pixel, a photography business based in Metuchen, believes professional photography is an investment.
“It is expensive, but it is something to have forever and pass down to future generations,” Geerdts said. “It’s so important to have portraits that we can frame and hang and have in albums to look at for years and years. What do we have from our parents and grandparents to remember them? We have photos, not images on our phones. Professional photography is worth the investment for our children and their children.”
Geerdts became a professional photographer 12 years ago.
“I have worked alongside many other photographers over the years and attended workshops, seminars and photography conventions every year to keep learning and growing in this field,” she added. “I am meticulous about lighting, details and expressions which sets me apart from my competition. I am very patient and experienced with babies and children which my clients love and helps me get that perfect expression.”
When she first started this business, she said she mainly was photographing weddings, children and family portraits.
“After a few years I decided to specialize in newborn photography which has become very popular ever since Anne Geddes introduced several books featuring newborns as art,” Geerdts said.
Geerdts said she believes the privacy of a photo shoot of a baby offers parents peace of mind.
“People do not want to take their newborns to the mall … they want someone who knows how to properly hold and soothe and handle a newborn,” she added. “They want safety to be number one. They want a nurturing environment for their new baby. That is what I provide. Very few photographers can handle newborns and take those beautiful peaceful newborn photos.”
According to Geerdts, mall photography studios do not offer the range of options that her business does.
“There is a major difference between the photography you get from mall and what you will get in my studio,” she added. “I have a wide variety of backgrounds and props for all different ages and occasions. The mall type of photography is a fast session usually run by operators that do not specialize in working with babies and children the way I do.”
In addition, Geerdts continues to photograph weddings and other events such as christenings and showers and also photographs bar/bat mitzvahs. She also is retained for headshots, commercial photography, real estate photography, dating website portraits and more.
